Natural Strengths, Skills, and Abilities

Published: February 2, 2026

Imagine thousands of leaders around the world like Eve and Monique feeling energized after identifying and learning to lead from their strengths and skills rather than simply their abilities—the things they can do.

When we embrace our God-given strengths and skills and boldly live and lead in those ways, we grow in confidence and joy. This is why PLI trainers spend time with ministry leaders. We help them discover their strengths and passions and how the Holy Spirit has uniquely called them to engage in the mission of God.

We are invited to live out the mission of God — everyone, everywhere, everyday.

The Slingshot and the Rock

1 Samuel 17 demonstrates the importance of living out our gifts for God’s glory and trusting God’s power for the victory. As David set off to fight Goliath, he placed Saul’s armor aside and picked up his own slingshot and five stones. David trusted God would work through his natural strengths and skills. And God did!

Too often, we are tempted to minimize the slingshot and rock—the natural strengths and skills—that God has given us. Instead we pick up someone else’s armor, believing their gifts are more effective than our own. We try to fit into someone else’s mold or expectation of what living out the mission of God looks like.

When we attempt to live and lead in ways that don’t align with our God-gifted strengths and skills we feel exhausted. Carrying someone else’s armor is hard work.

There is good news! Ephesians 2:8-10 reminds us that although there is nothing we can do to earn God’s grace, each of us has been designed for a purpose. We are God’s handiwork—His masterpiece. We bring glory to God when we live into the fullness of who we are created to be.

At PLI, we help participants distinguish between natural strengths, skills and abilities.*

Table defining natural strengths, skills and abilities.
Natural strengths definition:
1. general areas of interest and strength identifiable from childhood—areas where things seem to come easily and naturally
2. activities and processes you are good at, enjoy and are energized by, are affirmed by others, and bless others.
Examples: storytelling, teaching, music, writing, hospitality, empathy, science, organization, etc.
Skills definition:
1. developed when someone spends time learning and specializing within their natural strengths.
2. may be cultivated through continuing education, apprenticeship, coaching, and the like

Example: someone who has a natural strength in empathy may develop specialized skills in counseling, social work, therapy, etc.
Abilities definition:
Definition:
1. things one can do well, but that don't energize them or bring them joy

Example: a person is able to organize details for events, but feels inefficient and finds little joy in it
Note: While it is important to recognize your abilities and be willing to function in them to serve the mission of God, if you serve in this way for long periods of time, you feel drained and unfruitful.

Being able to distinguish between our natural strengths and skills and our abilities allows us to make wise choices about how we live and lead. Choosing to live and lead out of our strengths and skills brings joy and confidence.

We are invited to live out the mission of God — everyone, everywhere, everyday. How has God uniquely gifted and created you to engage in His mission?
