When you act on the vision God gives, the work quickly becomes real. Across the world, faithful leaders discover that conviction alone cannot carry them through seasons of leading change.
Leaders need insight and skill to guide people through change so that the ministry they lead aligns more fully with God’s mission. Change doesn’t unfold by accident; leaders cultivate it through prayer, discernment, and intentional effort.
From years of walking with leaders around the world, we’ve learned that leading effective change includes seven essentials. Treat these essentials as both a roadmap to lead change faithfully and a mirror to evaluate how well you’re walking through the process.
Seven Essentials for Leading Change

1. A Clear Picture of the Mission
Have a clear picture of what God is calling you to change in order to fulfill the mission. A clear vision inspires and motivates people, helping them see how change allows the Gospel to reach more people and giving them courage to make needed sacrifices.
2. Trust, Confidence, and Respect
Earn the trust, confidence, and respect of those you lead. Character builds trust, competence earns respect, and clarity around vision builds confidence. As you lead people through the loss of the known and the fear of the unknown, their trust in you is crucial.
3. Communication
Talk often and clearly about the changes taking place. Effective communication is essential. Communicate simply, consistently, and frequently. Listen well. Affirm those who acknowledge the need for change, thank those who engage, and celebrate stories of fruitful ministry that inspire others.
4. Timing
Lead change at the right time and with the right pace. Larger changes—and those that affect more people—require more time and communication. Smaller shifts can move faster. Discern God’s timing and bring people along patiently. Getting timing right—both moment and pace—is essential for change that endures.
5. Strengths and Skills
Ensure your ministry has the strengths, skills, and abilities needed to make the changes. May we encourage you? When God leads, He provides what is needed. The believers around you are the most valuable resource—thank God for them, release them to serve, and watch what the Holy Spirit can do through their gifts.
6. Relationships
Understand the relational connections that move change forward. Get to know your people. Consider the relational ties and influences that shape how change is received. When leaders gain the support of key influencers and those individuals join in the change, many others follow.
7. Resources
Consider the financial resources needed and trust God to provide. If funding is required, count the cost wisely, as Jesus teaches in Luke 14:28–31. Plan carefully, secure commitments, and move forward in faith—trusting in God’s provision every step.
Each essential matters.
These essentials work together to lead to healthy, mission-aligned change. Each one matters. (That’s why we call them essentials!) When one is missing or ignored, the process of change breaks down.

- Without clarity around vision, you create confusion.
- Without cultivating trust and communicating, you create resistance.
- Without time, relationships, or strengths, you create frustration.
- Without the needed resources, you create anxiety.
As you lead, pause often to ask:
- Which of these essentials am I most inclined to forget or skip?
- Which of these essentials have I leaned into most when leading through change?
- What needs clarity?
- Where do I need to build trust?
- How can I communicate hope?
- Which relationships do I need to spend more time developing?
- How can I get a clearer picture of the strengths and skills in our church/organization?
- Am I under, or over, estimating our resources?
Use these questions to rely on the Holy Spirit for shaping your leadership and keep the mission of God at the center.
Around the world, leaders like you are walking this same journey—leading the vision God has given, realigning ministries, and shaping cultures of discipleship. The work can feel challenging at times, but you do not walk alone. The Holy Spirit goes before you, giving vision, counsel, and wisdom to lead change that reflects God’s heart and connects many more people to Jesus.
